Cunning Fox

6 - 9 Berth Narrowboat, Silver Fox Class

Cunning Fox is a large boat ideal for three couples wanting the luxury of space or big groups up to nine people. A member of our Silver Fox Class of luxuriously appointed Semi-traditional narrowboats.

A 6+3 berth with 3 private permanent fixed double sleeping cabins which are separated by 2 bathrooms – en-suite if used as a 4 berth. The galley, saloon and dining area are towards the front where another 3 people can sleep as it easily converts at night into a third double berth and additional single bed. This traditional layout allows the main sleeping cabins to be out of the way from the social areas in the saloon and outside bow deck as well as offering the best tranquil views through the windows and front doors.

Luxuriously appointed and beautifully crafted with an uplifting warm interior in Maple and Cherry woods that contrast with a sumptuous Walnut floor throughout. Facilities include 2 toilets, 2 showers, a comprehensively equipped galley with a full-size cooker and microwave, a 240v electrical system as well as central heating that provides great comfort from March to November.

At 69ft(21m) long she has a bow deck with space to socialise and a Semi-traditional stern that has an elevated steering position for greater visibility and improved weather protection in the steering cockpit.  Popular with dog owners, the lockable doors provide the bonus of an ideal pen for dogs.  Though there isn’t a guard rail to protect the steerer around the back deck, the semi-traditional stern has seating for 2 to 3 people on the storage benches when cruising.

  • Weekend breaks (4:30pm Fridays to 10:00am Mondays)
  • Midweek breaks (4:30pm Mondays to 10:00am Fridays)

9 adults spent a wonderful, fun filled weekend together aboard Cunning Fox! The whole experience with Foxhangers was beyond any reproach!! Everything we could possibly need was in the well-equipped, spotless kitchen, comfortable, warm beds all invitingly made up. Organised, friendly and most helpful staff, not only put us at ease, but gave us all the information and confidence we needed to make this an experience we will all talk about for years to come! THANK YOU Foxhangers! We can’t wait for another experience like that.

Captain Cpt Ali Mathison, Cunning Fox October 2023

Our stay on Cunning Fox was wonderful. A lovely boat. The handover and tutorial from Patrick was fantastic and informative, it really helped and made us feel much more confident starting our holiday. We highly recommend Foxhangers and will most definitely holiday through them again.

Captain Cpt Lisa Holloway, Cunning Fox August 2023

An excellent long weekend on Cunning Fox! A comfortable, well laid out boat. Would certainly recommend Foxhangers, and hope to comeback soon.

Captain Cpt F Goodwin, Cunning Fox August 2023

We had an amazing time. The whole experience from the professional support offered by yourselves to the last minute was superb.

Captain Cpt Glen Barton, Cunning Fox August 2023

Hired two foxes to celebrate my birthday with family and friends. Set off on an adventure along the cut. Great scenery, bankside dining and boats. Had fantastic party with local musicians in Cross Guns - a convenient day's motoring west. Nobody told us a trip could be this good! Thank you Foxhangers!

Captain Cpt Ian Bell, Cunning Fox October 2022

Well... as a team building exercise for good friends it was brilliant. By the end we had settled into our roles and enjoyed ourselves. I think we will do it again! We had a lovely, relaxed handover. The Cunning Fox was adequately provisioned, and beds are comfortable. Advice when in difficulty when grounded overnight with low water levels was immediate and helpful.

Captain Cpt Andrew Prestt, Cunning Fox June 2022

Dear Sharon Thank you and all at Foxhangers for providing us with a fabulous holiday last week. Your team made everything so easy; from the initial booking & help sheets, through to the induction and the return of the boat. (Thank you too for helping one of our team catch-up with us en-route). The boat was just perfect; clean and equipped with everything we could wish for. The route west from Foxhangers is just magical. This proved to be a perfect opportunity for four old university chums to spend some time together just catching-up – after 45 years! We will certainly be back.

Captain Cpt Alan Smith, Cunning Fox May 2022

Very enjoyable weekend for all six of us plus one dog. A first for all of us but once we became familiar with what to do, everyone relaxed and got into the slower pace of life on the canal. Our only complaint was we all wished it could have lasted longer! Hope to return again in the future. And hopefully for longer than just a weekend.

Captain Cpt Howard Rolph, Cunning Fox May 2022

Thanks for a great weekend break , very professional and seamless from arrival to return of boat , Cunning Fox 🦊 was a great layout as comfort was important for our group of four chaps ..would definitely recommend Foxhangers and would use again If we chose the Kennet & Avon canal again . Cheers Andy and crew !

Captain Cpt Andrew Reville, Cunning Fox May 2022

Had such a great few days on Cunning Fox. Weather was good, company excellent, stunning scenery and the boat surpassed all expectations. So well-equipped and comfortable. You guys work so hard to ensure we all have a great time. Feel totally energised and ready to face the world again. Thank you Sarah x

Captain Cpt Sarah Michael, Cunning Fox May 2022

We had a wonderful Easter break on the Cunning Fox canal boat. Two families came together to celebrate two 18 year olds birthdays. Everyone loved it and got involved. Foxhangers staff were all great to deal with and very helpful from receptionist to the men at the boat yard the service was very professional, relaxed and friendly. The boat was great too and had everything we needed. Great trip, highly recommend this company 👍

Captain Cpt Julie Lawton, Cunning Fox April 2022

We Haven't been on the canals for 2 years because of covid but we went with Foxhangers again and they Haven't changed. The boat we had was Cunning Fox and the boat was immaculate clean and tidy like it always is. Sharon and the team in the office plus the team on the wharf are just so helpful and polite and nothing is a problem. I would and have recommended Foxhangers to all my friends. Brill team. Thank you again for a great week hope to see you next year

Captain Cpt Malcom Baker, Cunning Fox March 2022

Hi We had great holiday and liked the situation of the boat yard. We had some first timers on board and the Kennet and Avon is amazing for the variety of locks, swing bridges and aqueducts. So much in a short distance. The engineer was very helpful too when I spoke about our toilets and gave us advice. Sharon was a great help in the office too and I felt reassured during the whole Covid issue, as we were due to go last year. If we chose to go on the Kennet and Avon again, we would be very happy to use Foxhangers.

Captain Cpt Sandra Bowden., Cunning Fox October 2021

We had a great weekend aboard Cunning Fox creating memories with our family, we were three generations and a dog. It was the first time in a canal boat for the younger members and they had a fantastic time. The boat was well equipped with plenty of instructions and helpful information, The handover was very professional giving lots of handy tips for those of us who hadn't been on a canal boat for a few years, and made it very easy to sail away. Our holiday ended all too soon, Thank you very much for such a memorable experience.

Captain Cpt Hugh Robinson, Cunning Fox August 2021

Dear Foxhangers We had a great time on Cunning Fox from the excellent handover and training given by Mark right through the 4 nights on the boat. The equipment was all in perfect working order and all our requirements were fully met. This was our second holiday on Cunning Fox and I would highly recommend this boat to any large party. The trip to Bath and back was easily done in 4 days and provided everyone with the opportunity to open locks and swing bridges (but not too many) and for a turn at the tiller.

Captain Cpt Alan Vigar, Cunning Fox June 2021

Dear Sharon I wanted to say a huge thank you to you all for such a fantastic holiday over the weekend. You were all great from check in, to departure briefing, through boat damage and return procedure. I would like to especially thank Andy who was both efficient and friendly. Thank you so much - Julie will write a rave social media review. I keep off it - apart from in my working life! I will recommend you to all. It was also great travelling through my childhood! Joanna

Captain Cpt Joanna Reynolds, Cunning Fox June 2021

A relaxing time on the water and despite the restrictions we had a great time. The boat was fully equipped and catered for all our needs. The staff at the Marina were professional, knowledgeable, and covered all that we needed to know. Sharon in the office was a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended.

Captain Cpt Anthony Watkins, Cunning Fox April 2021

Hello Foxhangers crew and THANK YOU! We had an absolutely fabulous time on the Cunning Fox. We were 6 adults, a 4-year-old, a 7-month old and a dog and it couldn’t have been a better trip for this motley bunch with something for everyone and feeling very safe in these difficult times. Complete novices to narrowboating we nevertheless chose the Caen Hill baptism of fire which kept us all super busy all morning and we were then able to relish the total peace and relaxation of the canal beyond. Can totally recommend this as a family activity for fun and togetherness and can totally recommend Foxhangers. We really hope to do it again!

Captain Mr Pullen, Cunning Fox July 2020

We dropped the boat back last night and had a great long weekend. Thank you for a wonderful boat and the quality of service.

Captain Mark Rowley, Cunning Fox August 2019

We have just returned from our second family holiday with Foxhangers on the beautiful Kennet and Avon canal, aboard the Cunning Fox barge. Both trips were magical and memorable- giving us priceless time together in serene and beautiful surroundings. The nine of us felt like the barge had become a home from home and having the bridges and locks to navigate always gets everyone involved and working together- from the teenagers to the grandparents. It's such an inclusive holiday and blissful to get away from the frantic stresses of everyday modern life. Both times we returned so much more relaxed, tanned (!) and happy and just didn't want to give the barge back. We all thoroughly recommend Foxhangers for their excellent service, communications, friendliness and well-maintained barges, which have every facility you could need! Thank you- and we will be back!

Captain Emma Stepto, Cunning Fox July 2019

We had a fantastic time aboard Cunning Fox, despite the weather. It's a particularly good holiday with children as it teaches them all about teamwork, cooperation, and good communications. Actually, we decided it wasn't really a holiday, it was an adventure! We saw lots of wildlife along the Kennet and Avon canal which made it even more special. The boat was comfortable and spacious, and well kitted out. The organisation and support from Foxhangers was impeccable. Thank you!

Captain Rebecca Blum, Cunning Fox July 2019

We had an absolutely fantastic first narrowboat holiday on board 'Cunning Fox'. The handover from Billy was very thorough and friendly; he also went out of his way to get us a pole for our little boy's 'Jolly Roger' flag. Thank you so much, we will be back!

Captain Winearls, Cunning Fox June 2019

We had a fantastic four days on Cunning Fox. Although there was were six of us plus a dog, there was adequate storage space for all our bits and pieces. We found the boat very clean and the beds very comfortable, The kitchen was well equipped. As this was our first time, it was made very easy with the training from your excellent staff. A big thank you to them. We will look forward to coming again and if you have any offers for next year please send on to us.

Captain Gregory Kerr, Cunning Fox April 2019

Brilliant week on Cunning Fox. Sorry to be on the way back to Foxhangers in the morning.

Captain Harry and crew, Cunning Fox May 2019

Hi all at Foxhangers. Thank you so much for a great holiday on Cunning Fox. Clean and tidy as always. The boat was perfect and thank you for taking it up to the top of Caen Hill locks for us. The weather was just perfect, your staff were so polite and helpful as they always are, so hopefully we will see you all next year.

Captain Malcom Baker, Cunning Fox March 2019

We had a fabulous break. we went west avoids the Caen locks as first timers (and a 4 year old) Great boats amazing scenery great pubs... family memories!

Captain Amy Sampson, Cunning Fox

Thank you for a wonderful weekend greatly enjoyed by all and what weather could not have asked for better.

Captain Caroline Moss, Cunning Fox

I just want to say we all had a great week on Cunning Fox. We had 3 newbies on board and they enjoyed it so much. The boat was clean and tidy as always. We have been with you about 7 times now and are looking forward to next year. Cannot thank your staff enough, you are all so kind and helpful, thanks again.

Captain Malcom Baker, Cunning Fox

We all had a wonderful holiday on Cunning Fox last week, thank you so much. Your service was really excellent, from the day I booked our holiday until the day we came back. We were total novices at canal boating but I must say we had no mishaps, apart from running aground one morning! We would not hesitate to recommend your company to anyone. Thank you so much. You may see us again next year, in fact, my eldest granddaughter asked if we could all go for the whole of the Summer holidays, but we did tell her that was not going to happen!

Captain Judith Stone, Cunning Fox

Sixteen members of our family, together with two dogs, had a wonderful week aboard Cunning, Flying and Urban Fox. For some it was their first experience, others had been on the canals on and off for the last 47 years. We thought they were the best narrow boats that we had ever hired! They responded well and were generously equipped. The holiday was great and all that we hoped it would be.Thank you Foxhangers team.

Captain Frances Maddison-Roberts , Cunning Fox

We all left the boatyard feeling pretty high after a great weekend on the water. Once we had learned to cut a straight line, we were off! The boats were really well equipped and comfortable - and the Foxhangers staff were great to deal with. Thanks!

Captain Luke Chitty , Cunning Fox

We hired the Cunning Fox from you on 19th June for 4 nights. There were 6 adults and two babies, and I have to say you were very accommodating throughout the booking process and on a pre-visit when you let us have a look at a similar boat so that we could sort out the babies bedding arrangements. The week was fabulous be it very VERY HOT!! There was plenty of storage, everything was clean and the showers were much better than we expected. I can't think of anything that you didn't include except of course air conditioning hee hee. I would recommend it to anyone, and would recommend your company. Thank you we had a great family holiday and a wonderful experience!

Captain Janice & Roy Mcgranaghan and family. , Cunning Fox

3 couples on Cunning Fox have just had a brilliant week travelling to Bath and back. Yes I fell in but that was my own fault, (not as cold as I thought it might have been !)

Captain Pete Matthews, Cunning Fox

Hi All at Foxhangers... Five wonderful days spent on HMS Cunning Fox... We got as far as Dundas Wharf along the beautiful Kennet and Avon Canal. It would have been further if not for the amount of wonderful pubs along the way... The Boat and everything to do with it was fantastic ... I would thoroughly recommend Foxhangers anytime. They even arranged the beautiful weather

Captain Ann & Dave, Alison & Dave, Ann & Geoff , Cunning Fox

We had a lovely weekend aboard the 'Cunning Fox', the staff were friendly and helpful and the boat was clean and well equipped. We will definitely be back!

Captain Mrs Rossbach , Cunning Fox

We rented out Cunning Fox 69ft , all four of us are sailors and have our own boats so we are used to boat handling, but we soon realised she was not going to handle the same as our sailing yachts. After a couple of days we  got the hang of it and enjoyed our week very relaxing, but also energetic when doing the locks and swing bridges. We found the Kennet and Avon Canal very picturesque and especially enjoyed our day in Bath. Foxhangers staff were very helpful and the Boat was clean and well equipped. Access to Boat was easy as we parked up beside her and loaded. Weather was fine so good time was had by all.

Captain Mrs Steggles , Cunning Fox

A delightful long weekend for our party of eight on "Cunning Fox". Everything from the warm and friendly welcome of the Foxhangers staff, the superb vessel and the gorgeous Wiltshire countryside made a break we will all remember for many years. We are all narrow boat experts now and will be returning.

Captain Mr P Styles , Cunning Fox

We had a great time thank you all at Foxhangers such a friendly group of people we would not use any other company as we find your staff so helpful we will see you all next year thankyou

Captain Mr M Baker , Cunning Fox

We would just like to say what a fantastic weekend we had! It was a surprise for my partners 40th birthday, and we couldn't have been happier with the weekend! We loved the boat which was spacious enough for 7 of us, and the facilities on board were great! We managed to find a beautiful local pub, and also managed to go into the beautiful city of Bradford On Avon for the day. All in all it was an amazing weekend, and we would definitely be visiting foxhangers again. It is reasonably priced compared to others and we felt it was extremely good value for money!

Captain Charlene Johnson & friends , Cunning Fox

Thanks for the email. We thoroughly enjoyed the weekend aboard ‘Cunning Fox’ and are already making plans to possibly do the same thing next year (hopefully longer than a weekend next time)! Foxhangers made everything easy and the tuition would relax even the most apprehensive first time skipper. In one weekend we made it to the Avoncliff aqueduct before returning to base for Sunday evening. We would recommend the Barge Inn, Seend and the Swan Hotel in Bradford on Avon for differing but both excellent evening meals. I have made a video which can be found here: https://youtu.be/SCT5vvTvnpw Happy for you to use this on your website or wherever. Hopefully it gives an insight to those first timers who are considering a boating holiday!

Captain Mr Lee McIlwraith, Cunning Fox

Our 3rd hiring from Foxhangers and we were not disappointed. Boat good and service excellent. We left a coat behind which was posted on to us and no charge made.

Captain Mr Barry Jones, Cunning Fox

Hired two foxes to celebrate my birthday with family and friends. Set off on an adventure along the cut. Great scenery, bankside dining and boats. Had fantastic party with local musicians in Cross Guns - a convenient day's motoring west. Nobody told us a trip could be this good! Thank you Foxhangers!

Captain Cpt Ian Bell, Cunning Fox October 2022

Six of us recently a wonderful week's holiday on Cunning Fox, going west from Foxhangers to Bath and back. The weather was with us, for the most part, the scenery beautiful and Cunning Fox ran like a dream throughout. Foxhangers staff are wonderful people who did a marvellous job of helping us prepare and plan our route, and did their best to accommodate any and all requirements. While the week seems a long time ago now, we'll remember it for a long time and look forward to repeating the experience in the future.

Captain Mr Randy Banks , Cunning Fox

Whilst I’ve done many canal holiday’s before this was my first experience on the Kennet & Avon and of Foxhangers. I have been truly impressed right from the outset when making the original booking. The booking team were so very helpful and really wanted to make sure that they got every aspect of our holiday right.  Our boat was very clean and nicely set out - everything we could possibly have needed was available and neatly stowed. Only three or our group of 8 (which included 1 four-yr old and two family members visiting from Thailand) had been on a canal before but everyone was entranced by the picturesque route from Foxhangers to Bradford on Avon. The wild flowers and birdlife were a true highlight and we were all excited to find glow-worms. The number of locks and swing bridges on this route was perfect for a novice team - enough to be really interesting but not so many to be demanding and the pubs were very good too. Thank you to all the team at Foxhanger’s we had a truly great few days. Will be back soon and we might just opt to turn right out of your base next time … but having driven up and looked at Caen Hill we might need a fitter crew! PS - one top tip … Tesco did an ace job delivering food to the boat. I hadn’t realised that there was a local shop that did deliveries and next time might opt to use them also.

Captain Mrs Jane Cochrane , Cunning Fox

On arrival the handover was very thorough and informative (but not too long) once David was happy we were on our way. Canal boating is the most relaxing way to see the countryside and wildlife, you can feel your work stresses leaving your body as you chug along at just 3-4 miles an hour. We made it to Bath to wind-round by late afternoon second day then back to Bathampton to moor up and sample the great food at the George Inn, spent the day in Bath Wednesday, then back to Foxhangers Wharf for Friday Morning. I have used Foxhangers twice before with workmates and now with Family and I will definitely use them again.

Captain Mr S Weeks , Cunning Fox

Everybody enjoyed themselves so much so that the grandchildren want to go again and one daughter-in-law in particular who prefers the more exotic locations was waxing lyrical about the peace and serenity that you get on the canal and is looking at going again. So we couldn't have asked for more.

Captain Mr & Mrs Morgan , Cunning Fox

We had a fabulous weekend on the Kennet and Avon canal on the Cunning Fox. The weather was warm and the boat was comfortable. The Foxhangers staff were extremely helpful and flexible. Would definitely recommend Foxhangers Thank you

Captain Mr & Mrs Rudgley, Cunning Fox

We had two boats Cunning Fox and Foxtrot for a family group of 16 over a long weekend in August. Only three people had previous experience on narrow boats but that did not matter and by the end of the weekend we had two new budding skippers. The size of the boats were just right for what we wanted, although we were full up we all seemed to have plenty of space, the boats are very well designed, clean and well equipped, and Foxhangers could not have been more helpful. With such a big group we tended to eat our main meals at pubs and there was plenty of choice but the Brewery at Seend did us proud, having booked ahead for the first evening. The trip down to Bradford and back was just right giving everyone enough to do in terms of locks and swing bridges, the verdict was that it was all great fun and worth repeating.

Captain Mr Garth Long , Cunning Fox

As usual the boat we stayed on Cunning Fox, was as excellent as ever, staff very friendly and very helpful especially when some of the bedding accidently got wet when the front doors opened. At the next stopping place, clean, dry bedding waiting for us and the wet bedding collected, excellent service.  Thank you.  Now if only you could arrange the weather!!!!

Captain Mrs Hair , Cunning Fox

We had an absolutely lovely time. The barge was clean, cosy and well equipped. We were well informed about life on board and recommendations about routes and pubs was very welcome. We would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun holiday.

Captain Downey Family , Cunning Fox

Seven of us hired Cunning Fox, the boat was well laid out, very clean and tidy, and best of all, the people at Foxhangers were really helpful and friendly. We were all first time narrow boaters, and the staff explained  all the workings of the boat to us, and how to use the locks. We would definitely use Foxhangers again, but probably head East the next time, up the Caen Hill flight. Thanks for a great holiday.

Captain Charlie Kay-McQue, Cunning Fox

Six senior citizens spent  Monday - Friday on the Cunning Fox. The boat was well equipped & in excellent condition. Four of us had been on canal boats before & said this was the best ever, from the efficient staff when booking to picking up the boat @ Foxhangers you couldn't have asked for better. We must add the two Pubs in particular that had exceptionally good & reasonably priced food & well worth a visit, were the Hop Pole Inn @ Limpley Stoke & on our last the Three Magpies @ Scotts Wharf Bridge.

Captain 6 Seniors from Kent, Cunning Fox

We hired Cunning Fox again and it lived up to all the usual expectations, warm, comfortable and suited our needs perfectly, especially as the weather was rather cold and wet, hot showers and central heating were very welcome.  Staff friendly and helpful and dates adaptable to our needs, we have hired from you in other years and will be back for more, thank you.

Captain Pauline, Cunning Fox

We had a brilliant week on the Cunning Fox (2nd June 2012). The layout was perfect for our needs. A really good boat with loads of storage, well equipped and spotlessly clean. The shampoo in the shower rooms, the chocolate and wine in the fridge were all lovely touches, and I loved the hot water bottles - the first time on a boat in the last 13 or so years that hot water bottles have been supplied. We didn't actually need them as we had a really hot week but normally we "do" the canals at the end of October when they will come in useful when, as we will, return to "Foxhangers". Many thanks to you and your very cheerful staff.

Captain Margaret Wheeler , Cunning Fox

Just to say how much we enjoyed our first ever canal boat hire on the Cunning Fox this October 2011, it was brilliant. All 4 of us will do it again sometime. Everything was organised by Foxhangers to perfection. Keep up the good work.

Captain Hans and Andrea Simons, Cunning Fox

Lovely Craft, very clean with a well equipped kitchen to meet all our needs. With another Grandchild joining the party, and needing their own bedroom, we had to sleep in the Salon. We coped with that easily and it meant we had an extra cuppa in the mornings. At 69’ long, we found our ‘walkie-talkies’ very useful. The whole week was very relaxing and we are each looking forward to doing it all again. Mention must be made of ALL the Staff, from Front Office to Quayside. Everyone was extremely helpful and patient with us when giving full instruction. Just the right start to a brilliant week.

Captain Anne & Alan Jackson, Cunning Fox

Thank you for the email about our Damage Deposit refund. We all had a brilliant holiday on the Cunning Fox - my relatives from Rome thought the whole experience was wonderful!! Thanks again for a great holiday experience.

Captain Valerie, Cunning Fox

Great boat, great canal, great service, great holiday. What more could you want? Many thanks and all the best.

Captain Tritton family , Cunning Fox

Thank you all for such a pleasant holiday, all your staff were really helpful and the boat was well equipped and the layout was great.

Captain Shaun Fox , Cunning Fox

Me and six friends hired Cunning Fox, for a short break heading towards bath. As none of us had never been on a canal boat we didn't know what to expect, but after our briefing everything was fine and we all had one of our best weekends ever and we definitely be doing this on yearly basis. The staff were excellent and the boat was spotless. Can't wait till next year.”

Captain Marino and crew, Cunning Fox
